Residents of Pennsylvania, California, Illinois, Michigan, North Dakota and New Hampshire may receive millions of dollars due to a settlement between the state Insurance Department and John Hancock Life Insurance Co. The six states entered a regulatory settlement with the company and John Hancock Life and Health Insurance Co. over unpaid life insurance benefits.
The settlement is expected to result in millions of dollars more per year paid to residents. An investigation found that for years John Hancock didn't track down the beneficiaries of their life policies as required by law. Now they will have to pay out tens of millions instead of pocketing the money, which was their normal course of action.
